PCL 1.8.0rc2

Jochen Sprickerhof

Hi everyone,

I've just tagged the second release candidate of 1.8.0. It would be
great if you could all test it and send bug reports and patches before
we tag the final release. Have a look here for a list of changes:

https://github.com/PointCloudLibrary/pcl/blob/master/CHANGES.md#-180-xx112015-

Especially it would be great to get feedback from Windows and Apple
users.

Thanks a lot to Sergey for working so hard on PCL!

Cheers Jochen

pcl doesn't build for me on OS X with CUDA. I created a github issue about a month ago but there hasn't been any feedback on it. Did I perhaps choose the incorrect place to report issues?

Thanks for your help!

Hello Ahundt,

I think ppl here can help you with it, and also you can try the users mailing list. There are many people to look at it. You can also look i to this, if it helps you, however I am not sure if its CUDA specific, but has some GPU issues as well.

Thank You

If you come up with a patch, that would be great.

Note that CUDA support will be disabled in the default options for the
next release (as it is in master and rc). The point is that we can't
guarantee to have it working on all platforms (as you've found) and we
don't have the resources to give support for it.

Cheers Jochen

Also, the fact that the latests Macs are shipping with AMD cards is not helping to properly maintain support for the last generations with NVidia Cards.

Cheers

I can understand why the CUDA support should be disabled in the 1.8 release. I was wondering if there is any description for CUDA/PCL's current state enabled or not? There's probably 60+ CUDA source files in the module. Is the API documentation  the extent of a possible use case description? Are there perhaps examples or tutorials using PCL with CUDA somewhere?

Thanks.

You'll have to look at the cuda and gpu namespaces to get a sense of everything there is.

These are the tutorials that currently exist

I see no examples or tests, for gpu or cuda on the repo, so yeah a lot of inference :x

Cheers

Re: PCL 1.8.0rc2

I'm a little surprised that there are not even unit tests but I guess it's not enabled by default into the build. Seems like there was an earlier comment in this thread that it was good enough to leave in 1.8 but apparently not to the point to be turned on by default. I guess my question is what are the plans for cuda/gpu modules? Seems like they're in limbo.

Re: PCL 1.8.0rc2

Turns our there were unit tests as I should have known. In particular, test_normals.cpp contains unit tests comparing normal estimation from the standard PCL with the GPU version and shows how to upload and download pointclouds from the GPU.

I'm wondering if this should somehow be a more direct form of documentation/tutorial? I know there are the tutorials which contain a section for GPU. I wonder if there should be at least some mention of the unit tests (in or around the tutorials) and where to find the unit tests. Such action could offer even more insight into a large part of the PCL code base.

hi,
will the kinect2 grabber be integrated? since a lot of people are using the kinect2 but its still there with a pending pull request. The ros kinect2 grabber is optimized for network traffic and is using about 3-4 times more cpu power that the one in pcl so it would be a great thing to have it.

I'll add it to the topic pool for next week's meeting. Although since it didn't make it to rc2, it might be somewhat unrealistic to consider it for 1.8.0.
